5 Ways to Stay Active in the Winter
Do 4:30 sunsets and flurries in the forecast have you feeling blue? Feeling like you should sit less and exercise more? Here are 5 fun ways to stay active this winter:
Outdoor Winter Activities
There are many opportunities in Metro Vancouver for getting active outside and making the most of the cold weather, so bundle up and head out the door! Here are some ideas to inspire you:
- Snowshoeing the Dog Mountain trail in Seymour Provincial Park.
- Downhill skiing at the local ski hills: Cypress, Grouse, Seymour. Night skiing at a local mountain is an awesome winter Vancouver activity!
- Ice Skating at Robson Square (Open Dec 1, 2019, until Feb 29, 2020)
Take the Stairs
Opt for taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Walk or bike whenever possible in your everyday life instead of driving. Also, consider participating in the Urban Grind at the Vancouver Lookout where you have the opportunity to walk or run up 633 steps with proceeds go to a local charity. The Urban Grind typically takes place every Tuesday for the month of March.
Indoor Sports
If you are not an outdoors-type of person then consider joining an indoor sports league for your after-work evenings. There are many opportunities for adults throughout Metro Vancouver including leagues for volleyball, indoor soccer, floor hockey and dodgeball. Check out organizations like Urban Rec for more information.
Group Fitness Classes
Being in a group environment can boost your motivation and get you excited to exercise. There are many group fitness classes that you can sign up for including yoga, spin, aerobics, Zumba – the options are endless!
Find a Buddy
Sometimes the hardest part about exercising is actually walking out your front door. It makes all the difference if you can find a friend to hold you accountable to your fitness goals. Exercising with a friend will not only make it more fun but may also help remind you to make your health a priority.
