About IMS:
Stemming from the principals of acupuncture, Dry Needling, also known as Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), uses myofilliment needles to stimulate the body. The needle penetrates down to the affected muscle triggering a twitch response. While the mechanism of dry needling is still not fully understood, researchers understand the change as a “neurological reset” – changing the way the mind and body function as a whole.
Effective for:
Releasing tight muscle bands
Improving muscle function
Improving movement
Reducing pain
The difference between Acupuncture and Dry Needling? Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in which different locations of the body known as acupuncture points, correspond with various diagnoses, symptoms and organs. TCM uses acupuncture to stimulate these specific points for certain duration of time, leading to a systemic change in the corresponding area. Similarly Dry Needling works to make a change however is targeting the muscle directly by the needle stimulating the muscle and thus providing a “reset” to that muscle. Dry Needling is also used to increase muscle function and speed up recovery.
Afraid of needles? Please don’t be. Many of our practitioners themselves have a fear of blood tests and injections. The needles used in Dry Needling are myofiliment, which means that the gage or size of the needle is much smaller than that of regular needles. They are small flexible and patients only experience a mild discomfort.
At painPRO, our practitioners employ Dry Needling as an aid in their treatment. It is generally combined with manual therapy and exercises to help you get better faster and more long-term. Dry Needling is recommended not only to make a direct change in the muscle affected, but to also make a global change; decrease pain, improve flexibility, neurodynamics and joint mobility, as well as increase healing rate and stimulate long-term recovery.
Benefits of IMS Treatment
- Reduces pain
- Fast muscle release
- Access to deep muscle layers
- Spot specific
Will it hurt?
IMS can be briefly uncomfortable and is a moderately invasive procedure.
How does it work?
By accessing specific muscle fibers the inserted needle will cause a contraction that in turn helps the muscle reset to its relaxed state.
