What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a form of exercise therapy designed and directed by our
specially-trained clinicians to restore optimal control during movement.
Pilates trained therapists approach movement and rehabilitation with a
focus on control, precision, concentration and alignment. Clinical Pilates
often differs from traditional exercise therapy in that there is an
emphasis on small, controlled movements that build a foundation for you to
confidently explore more complex exercise without pain or injury over time.

Difference between Clinical Pilates vs Traditional Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a recent adaptation of traditional Pilates developed by
Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It has been adapted and refined
by physiotherapists utilising modern rehabilitation techniques and an
improved understanding of anatomy and physiology. In Clinical Pilates (as
distinct from generic Pilates classes) exercises are carefully selected and
individualised after identifying specific areas for improvement.
Who can benefit from Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is useful for a wide spectrum of people. It allows for
slow, low impact exercises which can be extremely beneficial while
rehabilitating from an injury or recent surgery. Clinical pilates is also
great for athletes who want to maximise their performance with extremely
targeted and individualised exercises. Additionally there is great research
to support the use of Clinical Pilates in managing chronic conditions. For
example, Clinical Pilates has been shown, in a recent meta-analysis, to be
among the most effective forms of exercise to address chronic low back pain
(Hayden et al, 2021).
Really anyone can benefit from Clinical Pilates! It is a great way to help
you achieve a stronger, toned, more flexible body with increased postural
awareness and improved function.
Will it hurt?
Clinical Pilates is a slow, gentle approach to movement and can be a
wonderful place for clients who experience chronic or persistent pain to
explore movement comfortably and safely.
Benefits of Clinical Pilates
- Increased control through a greater range of motion.
- Allow Improved control over breathing
- Reduce neck pain and lower back pain
- Promotes body awareness
- Helps to improve athletic performance
How does it work?
Clinical Pilates is exercise using specialised spring-loaded equipment
(e.g. Reformer) which provides resistance through a full range of motion.
After a thorough assessment, clinicians trained in Clinical Pilates provide
one on one supervision to ensure proper technique and grades the exercise
to meet your goals and abilities.
Our Clinical Pilates trained Therapists
At painPRO we have Physiotherapists and RMTs who have the training to offer
Clinical Pilates to our clients. While each therapist has a unique approach
to treatment, all our Pilates trained practitioners approach your exercise
therapy with the goal to help you move more efficiently and confidently.
A note about Clinical Pilates with our RMTs
As you may imagine, this is a little bit different than your typical
massage therapy appointment. What you can expect from your Pilates session
is primarily Pilates-focused therapeutic exercise with manual therapy
blended in. Our RMTs utilize their broad scope of massage techniques
before, during and after your treatment. You might experience techniques
like myofascial release, joint mobilisation, articular strain techniques
and assisted stretching combined with Pilates. Bring exercise clothes!
Expect to be active for the duration of your session.
