Comparing ICBC Statistics for Lower Mainland

To contrast and compare our ICBC Demographic statistics with other locations, we conducted an analysis of 205 patients with ICBC claims at our painPRO Burnaby Metrotown location within the full calendar year of 2018.

Our Burnaby Metrotown location offers all therapeutic disciplines for motor vehicle accident-related treatment, including registered massage therapists (RMTs), physiotherapists, chiropractors, and kinesiologists.

The following statistics were gathered from ICBC patients who visited painPRO Burnaby Metrotown for practitioner treatment because of a motor vehicle accident.

General Demographic Findings

Statistics show that roughly 61 percent of these patients were female and that nearly 39 percent were male. A majority of these patients had either a desk or mild activity occupation, with 36 and 34 percent, respectively. Following this was a 22 percent occupation based on nonapplicable status, which includes retirement, unemployment, and students. Manual labour was the least of the occupations, accounting for 8 percent of total patients.

The average age of all the ICBC patients is around 36.5 years of age, which is nearly identical to Coal Harbour’s statistics and a few years less than Surrey Memorial. All three occupations had a similar mean age, only with manual labour being the greatest with nearly 37.5 years. Nonapplicable occupations had a mean age around 37, which demonstrates a greater amount of students to balance out the age of retired and unemployed adults. Females had a greater percentage of desk and mild activity occupations, whereas males had a greater variety in all four occupational types. However, the mean age between the two genders was nearly identical.

With Burnaby Metrotown statistics, we also found that the leading city of residence was Burnaby at 48 percent, with Vancouver and Surrey being the two runner ups at 29 and 10 percent. Since the patient base is not as concentrated in one city as Surrey Memorial, the cities of residence have more variety much like the Coal Harbour clinic. This implies that patients may work in the area of Burnaby Metrotown, seeking treatment during their working days.

This information can be useful for comparisons to other painPRO locations in future analyses. We can also use the information collected to study the demographics of patients who seek treatment from practitioners in Burnaby Metrotown throughout the year. The data from this study may also be helpful in determining trends in patient needs, which can help our painPRO offices devise better, more effective treatment plans for common complaints.
